Closets to Dream of
Barbie is not the only one with a dream house (and dream closet)! Every time I see a big closet with beautifully styled shelves, perfectly organized clothing and endless shelves of shoes I must admit I get a little bit envious. Having a well thought out and well-organized closet can make the experience of deciding on the days outfit feel like a trip to your favourite store - what girl doesn't want that!? While most of us only dream of the days where we can have a full dressing room in our house (complete with a vanity desk and mirror for make up, and some beautiful upholstered seating) there are definitely ways to improve any closet, no matter the size. Here are four simple tips to improve and style any closet.
1. Curate your clothes! While it can be hard to part with pieces you have once loved or made an investment in, use it or lose it. If you haven't worn it in the last year, chances are you won't be needing it again. Editing out old pieces not only visually cleans up your space but also allows you to take inventory of things you actually need.
2. Coordinate. While it may sound trivial and time consuming, it's amazing how much better a closet can look by colour-coordinating and having matching hangers. Replace your old mix-matched hangers with a set of new ones. This takes away some of the visual clutter, and allows hanging items (shirts, pants etc) to all hang at the same level. Investing in higher quality hangers can also extend the life of your clothing with more support and padding than the metal hangers from the dry cleaner provide.
3. Have a place for everything. Having smaller, designated spots for different categories of items is so helpful in keeping things organized. For example, drawer dividers to separate your socks and intimates and hooks for hanging jewelry. If you have adjustable shelves, make sure there is not too much distance between each one. Nothing creates clutter faster than having clothing stacked a mile high topple over.
4. Make it your own. No matter how small or insignificant a space may seem, one of my design philosophies is the importance in loving all aspects of your home. If you have a walk in closet, add a small area rug or light fixture to create some personality. Or, in a smaller space add some unique or funky pulls or hardware to liven things up.
